  • Tissue penetration during photobiomodulation is determined primarily by wavelength, tissue optical properties, and delivered energy density. It is not determined by whether the light source is a laser or an LED.
  • Near-infrared wavelengths, generally in the range of approximately 800–900 nm, demonstrate the greatest penetration into biological tissue. Both laser and LED devices are capable of emitting light within this range, and when wavelength and dose are comparable, near-infrared LEDs can achieve tissue penetration similar to near-infrared lasers.
  • Laser systems concentrate energy into a small focal point, whereas LED arrays distribute light across a broader surface area. For many veterinary applications, particularly those involving musculoskeletal structures, neurologic support, and whole-region comfort, broader coverage may be clinically practical and time-efficient.

Expanded Wavelength Options in Veterinary Care

Many traditional veterinary light therapy tools are limited to one or two wavelengths, typically red and near-infrared. While these wavelengths remain foundational, additional visible wavelengths allow veterinarians to broaden how light is used within wellness and rehabilitation contexts.

Different wavelengths interact with tissue and sensory systems in distinct ways. Sound-Based Frequency Modulation

These frequencies are based on observations described by Paul Nogier, who identified specific frequency ranges associated with observable physiological responses. These frequencies are not pharmacologic and do not rely on thermal mechanisms.

In this system, sound-based frequencies modulate the LED output, with light serving as the carrier. In animal wellness contexts, these modulated light signals are commonly incorporated to support autonomic nervous system regulation, relaxation, and stress modulation.
